Johanna Rolshoven

Johanna Rolshoven is Professor Emerita of Cultural Anthropology at the University of Graz, Austria. She holds a diploma in Social Anthropology from Aix-Marseille University (France, 1987), a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Marburg (Germany, 1991), and a diploma in Popular Culture Studies from the University of Zurich (Switzerland, 2004).

Her research interests combine urban and political anthropology with mobility studies and cultural studies in architecture, extending beyond traditional institutional frameworks of education. Her approach is grounded in critical-empirical cultural analysis and incorporates gender perspectives on spatial agency.

Her recent projects in gender and masculinity studies include the political production of “heroes,” cultural analyses of suicide bombers, women ethnologists in the French Resistance, and concepts of gender in everyday forms of resistance. Her current project focuses on Mediterranean port cities and citizenship, as well as the establishment of “L’université au bord de la route” in southern France.

She is the founder and co-editor of the book series *Cultural Anthropology Meets Architecture*, founder of the *International Association for Cultural Studies in Architecture* and its newsletter, and founder and co-editor of the multilingual open-access journal *Mobile Culture Studies*.

As part of her long-standing commitment to qualitative cultural analysis, she has been a member of the SAGW Network for Qualitative Social Research in Switzerland for many years and is co-author of the *Swiss Manifesto for Qualitative Social Research* (2010).
